HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HARLEQUIN LADYBIRDS?

The Harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis), is the most invasive ladybird on earth. Often called Asian Lady beetle, these ladybird infestations have the potential to jeopardise the 46 species of ladybird resident in Britain. In Britain they are most frequently orange in colour with 15 – 21 black spots.

Alternatively, they are black with two or four orange or red spots. The species is typically large (7-8 mm long) and even more dome-shaped than native European species (these characteristics distinguish Harmonia axyridis from native species in the UK). It often has white markings (typically defining an “M”- or “W”-shaped black area) on its pronotum, and usually brown or reddish legs. Preventing Harlequin Ladybird Infestations

Filling small gaps or cracks around door frames and putting mesh over air bricks can help prevent harlequin ladybirds from entering your home.

As well as endangering some native wildlife it can feel that the ladybird is taking over your home or garden. They are one of the few species who thrive over a harsh winter, often hibernating in cracks in your building.

WHAT HARM CAN HARLEQUIN LADYBIRDS CAUSE?

One of the UK’s most read newspapers recently reported that the harlequin ladybird “also bites humans, emits a rotting smell and stains surfaces with orange-coloured goo”. They leave chemical traces where they have walked in order to attract other ladybirds. An adult harlequin ladybird can live up to two or three years and in that time, can lay over 1,000 eggs – hence why these infestations can increase at alarming rates.

HOW SAFEGUARD PEST CONTROL HELPED WITH HARLEQUIN LADYBIRD CONTROL

We were recently called in to St Mary’s Church in Hampshire by a surveyor who had found harlequin ladybirds. Churches have regular inspections (surveys) to establish their condition and in this instance a surveying architect had found an abundance of the harlequin ladybird as an infestation.

Having found the information on the harlequin ladybird pest control on this website, our details were passed to the church. Mr Phillips, Reverend and part of the livery council at St Mary’s, called us in and was later kind enough to give us feedback on the service.

The harlequin ladybirds were treated in the church. They were found in the church itself, church tower, upper galleries, window louvres and also in the base of small sapling trees in the church yard. All these areas were treated as part of the pest control treatment.

A very high level of ULV treatment is used (micron insecticidal spray). A residual treatment was also applied (a water-based spray). The ladybirds were largely found in clusters and were treated appropriately. The specialist treatments are effective as they get into every crack and crevice. As it is lighter than air it is effective to this end. The ladybirds then drop within an hour of the treatment being carried out. Air vents were also sprayed as this was possibly an entry point into the church.

The Reverend was kind enough to comment, “This has seemed to work extremely well… not a trace of the ladybirds… spectacularly successful. The louvres are now absolutely fine” – Mr C Phillips, Part of Livery Council, St Mary’s Church, West Broyle, Hampshire.
